The toponym is explained by the word charcoal material presumably present in the area. There may also have been charcoal or perhaps a place where lignite was extracted. But it could more sim- ply be a very dark reference to the ground color, as it is certainly among the areas in which the volcanic matrix is absolute. The slope gradients are moderate to very steep. The soil, however, is deep and can be worked up to 60-70 cm without limestone rock. The soils have low permeability due to poor absorption, thus with limited water availability for the vines.
The exposure is mainly oriented to the east, with a medium altitude and good ventilation. Daytime temperatures are lower than average.
The soil is fairly intact and homogeneous along the explorable profile of the roots.
